I came across this at http://www.diskrotor.com/. It's a round wing with a retractable rotor, which would seem to grant most of the benefits of a helicopter, and most of those of a plane, though circular wings to have stability issues.

No, you dont get what I'm getting at. The retracting of the blades is impossible. The blades on a helicopter are designed the same way an Airplane wing are with ribbed body, theres no way you can make that scrunch

It's probably possible but highly inefficient...after storage for the jet fuel and place for the rotors to go and all that, you'd have no space for anything else.
