Hello my dear students! Even though I am from Russia, I live in Los Angeles California.. which is really cool, because each year 25 million people come to Los Angeles for vacation!

That's three times the population of New York City coming each and every year!

But why do all these people come to Los Angeles each year? They're certainly not coming here to see me!

The main reason why people originally came to Los Angeles was the weather!

The weather is sunny so many days out of the year, it's the perfect place to get out of the cold or the rain.

Because the weather was so good all year round, it also makes it easy for filmmakers to shoot their films, as they don't have to worry about rain. So in the early 1900s, silent films were being shot in Los Angeles.

People all over the world saw how beautiful Los Angeles was in the movies, which is the other main reason why people come to Los Angeles, because it is the Entertainment Capital of the World!

But I thought HOLLYWOOD was the Entertainment Capital of the World?

Actually, Hollywood does not really exist. It is merely an informal part of Los Angeles. It briefly was its own city, but that was short lived. The name stuck around because of a sign erected by some developers in 1923 to advertise a new housing development they were building called Hollywoodland. Over the years the sign lost the LAND part.. and remains one of the most famous landmarks in the world!

But.. I have some other interesting facts that you may not have known about Los Angeles:

Los Angeles is the birthplace of the Internet!

In 1969 at the University of California, Los Angeles, the first message was sent over the ARPANET which later became the Internet.

Despite its abundance of water seen on such TV shows as Baywatch, Los Angeles is actually like a desert with 325 days of sunshine and only 15 inches of rain fall each year.

The average temperature is 68 degrees in December and in July 82 degrees!

There are more artists, writers, filmmakers, actors, dancers and musicians living and working in LA than any other city at any other time in the history of civilization

Which is another main reason why people come to Los Angeles.. to hopefully catch a glimpse of celebrities. I live here, and believe me, I run into celebrities all the time!

Finally...

Los Angeles is so famous, people call it LA for short and people know what you are talking about.
