Want to learn to shred on Rocksmith? Having trouble with the first few songs? This tutorial, taught to you by Andy Schiller of BeyondGuitar.com, will show you the tips, tricks, and hints for being the best at the video game. Since you actually play the guitar during the game, proper guitar technique is essential. Learn improved ways to hold the pick, where to rest your right hand, left hand "anchor points" and more. Look for part 2 on www.BeyondGuitar.com.

I'm getting a lot of questions about putting the pick on the string, and here is a disclaimer: heavy metal players who play with tons of gain (aka distortion) MUST put their right hand on the strings to silence them, otherwise SQUEAL! Feedback city. (Unless, of course, you've set up your noise gate to the proper threshold...) All that aside, plugging your guitar in to your XBox 's USB "guitar preamp" provides little to no distortion, so beginners playing their first song may not HEAR extra ringing from unplayed strings (let's not get into COMPRESSION settings, etc...) So I may have jumped the gun on diving straight into muting unplayed strings, but since this is a technique tutorial, meant to build solid habits from the beginning, I thought it relevant to cover right hand muting techniques.

Additional disclaimer: Someone out there wrote me and said something about Jimi Hendrix being the greatest guitarist ever, and since he uses his thumb on the fretboard, shouldn't we be trying to copy him? Of course, I never intended to say that Jimi Hendrix was not a "pro" player. He succeeded DISPITE his unorthodox, unschooled hand position, not BECAUSE of it. Many self taught players develop limiting habits that they cannot undo later in life, THAT'S WHAT TEACHERS DO - POINT THOSE THINGS OUT TO YOU!!! Feel free to stick your thumb out if you want to, you'll discover that its impossible to play barre chords (as an example, check out the fingering Hendrix uses for the verses of Purple Haze for the G and A chords...) Conclusion: try the technique that has helped hundreds of generations succeed for thousands of years FIRST. If it doesn't work for you, try something else.

  • I've been playing like a kid and have been getting along fine with getting high scores using one finger. Deep down, I know I'm cheating myself because I feel that true mastery of this game relies on maximizing shifting and utilizing all fingers. Am I correct? All in all, I truly thank you for these helpful tips!
