@Antonellamalabela well you arent entirely correct... he was beautiful for all his time in the void, and during the Ainulindalë. he only took his dark presence shortly after he came to middle earth.

Whoa, ok, some of this art is really awesome. But the rest...
Guys, Melkor took a "beautiful" form only once during his existence in the Middle Earth and it was only when he was trying to befriend the elves for personal reasons and it didn't last that long. In his usual form he's effing huge, and while personal view of him may vary since everyone imagines him differently, I'm pretty sure he isn't supposed to have wings, pointy ears, nor does he lie around posing like a naked model. He's ugly.

@1mookiea well tolkien describes melkor as beatiful, indeed the most beatiful and powerful valar.

THE GREAT FEAR!

@Daniellmapp I think he did use some biblical influence. Also i see much resemblence between Sauron and Lucifer. Ambitions of power drove both of them to evil, both are descievers and corruptors, and both were once fair but now are twisted monsters. Only diference is that Sauron is still the "right hand man" and was corrupted by a greater evil. Satan preety much did it alone.

@Narania234 Is this quoted from Tolkien himself or mere speculation? If the latter is the case, then I believe we're all free to compare the Valar to any polytheistic religion of our choosing.

@EdikShepherd J.R.R. Tolkien was influenced by authentic religions and cultures of Celts, Vikings and Ancient Greeks. Valar are Olympian Gods, while Melkor is evil, tyranical king of Titans-Cronus.
Cronus' tyranny was overthrown by his son Zeus and other gods. Cronus was cast to Tartarus. Melkor's tyranny was overthrown by Manwë(Zeus)and the Valar. Melkor was cast to the void.

The beginnings of Melkor's evil is similar to that of the biblical Satan. He sought to increase the importance of his part in the Music of the Ainur, which was to become Arda (the Earth) when made physical. This led to discord and strife in the themes of the music, which became the beginnings of evil in the world. By analogy, Lucifer sought to make himself as influential, or so the bible says. Tolkien was a devoted Christian themed writer.
