On 4 July 1999, ARHS ran the first rail enthusiast tour with R711 following it's return to service with West Coast Railway. The destination was St Arnaud in central Victoria.

Enjoy this as reminder of how good rail tours used to be before the nanny state and rising public liability issues ruined all the fun of photo stops, etc...

West Coast Railway is also a memory, ceasing operations in 2004. R711 is now preserved by the dedicated volunteers from Steamrail Victoria at Newport.

  • That is an amazing whistle! Great video. Steamrail should now do another trip like this seeing as they have got R711 back on it's wheels!

  • @trainfan761 Would be great to ride on, but unfortunately I think the turntable at St Arnaud is out of service

  • I could never understand why R 711 had that whistle at the time. Can you tell me why? Great Video 5/5 favourite.

  • No idea why it had the whistle, but I reckon it sounded nice!

  • @Maccification yeh I completely, the old whistle and exhaust were better.. but i still like the one on there now

  • @nosmoking099 I like the exhaust too. It's a crying shame Steamrail removed the double Lempor exhaust.

  • 711 never had its whistle when WCR got her. so they just put a SAR 700 class 6chime on it. WCR had heaps of different whistles on there R classes though

  • good job

  • where is the turntable in St Arnaud.. I didn't know they had one.

  • I used to live there

  • I remember seeing this train come through bendigo every saturday afternoon heading to melbourne. I was even there when they had the opening or whatever for it. Took the mayo of Bendigo at the time at least 4 maybe 5 times to smash the bottle of champagne on the side of it haha
