Taiwan was first inhabited by either Malaysian or Polynesian peoples. Hundreds of years later, it became a safe haven for exiled immigrants from mainland China. Taiwan is also known as the Republic of China.

The correct figure should be ~1.3 million Mainland Chinese fled to Taiwan with Chiang's Nationalist troop in 1949, some flaws in the documentary. The population of Taiwan in 1949 (before the exodus from mainland) was 7 million. The Taiwanese population increased to 23 million by 2008.

The problem is people in Taiwan, including my wife say they are Han. "China" should be at least 10 different nations but the Communist are doing what the Russians tried to do move Northerners into all Providences to create one culture. A Han person traditionally was used more like saying you are Christian not a nationality. Sun Yet-Sen started this 'same culture 'same ethnicity' bit and the communist did a better politically lying to the different regions that wanted to be independent.

Remained Chinese? What is he talking about? First 80% of people living in Taiwan including my children, excluding me have Aboriginal Ancestors. This is because the Fujian people who came to Taiwan were primarily men and the only women available to them were natives or half natives. This created a mixed culture. The Taiwanese have been mis-educated since the KMT set foot here. It was the mainland that gave Formosa to Japan and it was the US that figured Taiwan would do well with ROC.
