Before I started building my droid I decided that it would do everything Artoo does in the films (IV, V, VI). Which of course means it must be able to project the Leia message, even if it's only 2D.

I bought an old (1950's) single slide projector off ebay for just over £6, took the LCD screen from a small MP4 player I had laying around, put it where the slide goes and the result can be seen above.

This is only a proof on concept - that you can just put an LCD in a slide projector to make a video projector. The case is far too heavy and the bulb is FAR too hot to use in the droid. I plan to remake the case in acrylic or wood, and replace the bulb with a more efficient LED light source.

  • you'll need a camera too then, since Leia records the message straight into R2D2

and either a cattle prod or a Tesla coil for the little shock device.

  • @robinmdh Already have a webcam to be mounted behind the radar eye ;o)

  • Aren't you afraid of overheating the lcd?

  • wow!!!!

  • @iToasterman The rear lights usually are, because they're indication lights, they don't need to be powerful. But they don't use LEDs in headlights, maybe for sidelights but LEDs just aren't powerful enough (yet) for full beam headlights. Search headlamps on wikipedia, it mentions LEDs and HID (xenon)

  • @msgoodliffe Aint those leds...

  • @iToasterman The super bright lamps they use in new car headlights. They're far more efficient so are brighter and don't get anywhere near as hot.

  • @msgoodliffe HID?

  • @iToasterman I've looked at LEDs and it seems like they may be quite expensive to get a really bright image. I've now started looking into HID lamps.

  • pretty sick!

  • add a misting type thing, that way, R2 projects the image onto mist making it looking like a real hologram
