The carving ability ESEE4 is generally good ("bushcraft wise") and will make me able to prepare fire tinder by carving feathersticks. Frost mora's is of course better at carving but they lack other abilities which the ESEE4 has (choosen a knife is allways a comprimise - a combo is often the best)

The choil on the ESEE-4 makes pressure/"force" carving more difficult because of the lack of handle in the choil area.

The Fallkniven F1 is some what better at this because it dose not have a choil and makes it alot more comfortable to carve with more force.

That said the ESEE-4 dose a fine job but more harder woods (eg. knotty oak, beech) will be difficult to carve feathersticks/fuzzies from ... because of the choil.

  • @pop2u1 The ESEE 4 is longer, broader and heavier than the F1. If I'm not mistaken, it's about the same thickness. So it can baton larger logs, chop more efficiently and will have a finer edge. Plus a better sheath, more aftermarket parts and lower price? I'll stick with my ESEE.

  • @BRIKbushcraft

The F1 chops better than the ESEE4 because of a better handle design that accomodates partially grip with a lanyard better the esee4.

I f**cked up the egde fatally doing the same kind of cross grain batoning that was no problem with the F1.

The F1 is muck more compact in its sheath than the ESEE4 and it weights 200g w seath compared to 290 for ESEE4 with sheath.

The F1 cost 3/4 of the ESEE4 in my country

  • Great review. 5********

  • how the hell do people make such good fucking feathersticks!?

  • I notice you've learnt the skill of point up and point down to move the shavings left and right :-)

  • @lmglange since you seem to use your ESEE 4 regularly, how often do you have to lubricate it to prevent it from rusting?

  • @lmglange what do you mean that the esee 4 is more capable of? and is the f1 good at batoning and is it sturdy.

  • F1 is soooooo far better knife. Better quality, better material, better steel, more edge retention, really moreeee sharp, free maintenance (esee 4 rust a lot an easy), in my opinion better design, carves much better . I have both, but the F1 is much better knife!.

  • @lmglange ,hod you experience the handle of the ESEE-4 is it good?not too short?

  • @lmglange ,the ESEE-4 is probably quite a bit tougher too.The F1 is stainless, and I have heard stories of some chipping.
