Pakistan Continues Offensive Against Taliban

The Pakistani military says it may have closed in on a Taliban stronghold in Swat after days of fighting in the valley.

The offensive in Swat, 130 kilometers northwest of Islamabad, is seen as a test of the government's commitment to fight a growing Taliban insurgency.

Recent footage from the Buner area shows the aftermath of heavy fighting.

Urooj Saifi of the United Nations Refugees Agency called for help from the international community for hundreds of thousands of people, displaced by the fighting.

[Urooj Saifi, UNHCR Emergency Coordinator]:
"I would like to alert the international community and the Pakistani community that we will need a lot of resources, a lot of funding to keep up with the problems, because at the moment we have enough resources, but in two to three days, if the influx continues, there will be a major problem."

The fighting has caused a civilian exodus from the valley, once a tourist destination, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis.

At least 360,000 people have left their homes in recent days, while about 500,000 in total are expected to flee.

They join about 600,000 people displaced earlier from Swat and other areas since fighting began in August.

A military offensive began last week when President Zardari was in Washington, assuring the United States that his government was committed to fighting militancy.
