Private Snafu in the Aleutians

"Private Snafu" was a series of animated short films produced by and for the Armed Forces during World War Two. This episode was written by Theodor "Dr Seuss" Geisel and directed by Chuck Jones.

This film is featured in the documentary "Red White Black & Blue". "Red White Black & Blue" is the first feature-length documentary to tell the story of the Battle of Attu, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II and the only invasion of the United States since the War of 1812.

This film will premiere on PBS on Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

There was the fighting over Attu with a few thousand killed, as well as a couple of naval engagements that resulted in at least 1 japanese submarine being sunk. Apparently the Japanese also managed to bomb Dutch Harbour fairly ineffectually as well from the Aleutians.  Lots of people succumbed to disease.

It wasn't effectively used like, ever. As for them killign each other, it didn't happen often, either. The biggest operation IIRC was the US/canadian invasion of Kiska, whcih ended with something like 130 allied casualties and zero japanese casualties as they had left the island a few weeks earlier.
