pardon me, *almost flat*. ^^
Some people say that there's a supermassive black hole in the center of most galaxies (that's confirmed). But I've also heard somewhere that in the center is an enormous amount of gas where stars get created at a speed much faster (relatively) then they normally would. Just fyi. :)

Oh they're not always flat. but yes most lage galaxies are flat because they follow specific principles of gravity and motion.
The direction would be im plied by the center of mass of the galaxy (black hole?).

They are flat of the same reason, that most planets and astroides in our solarsystem is on the same plane.
