Course Director: David A. Wood on behalf of IBC Global Academy
This course provides the key information necessary for understanding the petroleum industry along its full supply chain. It provides the global setting for the industry and then works its way down the supply chain from upstream to downstream. It covers exploration geophysical techniques, drilling techniques equipment and drilling process, production technologies, enhanced recovery technologies such as hydraulic fracture stimulation ("fracking") and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies. Pipelines, shipping, terminals and storage highlight the significance of midstream infrastructure to the supply chains.
Refinery processes (e.g. distillation, cracking and blending) are explained along with the calculation and significance of various refining margins and crack spreads. Natural gas moved by pipeline and in liquefied form (LNG) and transformed to petroleum products in gas to liquids (GTL) technologies has grown in significance in recent years. The need for gas storage facilities to balance periodic supply and demand fluctuations and the technologies involved in gas to power (e.g. combined cycle gas turbine, CCGT) are also reviewed in the course. The petroleum products wholesale and retail markets are evaluated in the context of the marketing and distribution sector of the supply chain.
The course also provides insight to the management and business processes associated with relationships, contracts, regulation, fiscal terms and the key roles played by governments and national oil companies and organisations representing sectors of the industry. The course concludes by identifying some of the key issues and challenges associated with the industry and what role oil and gas is likely to play in the global primary energy mix in coming decades.
