Hello and welcome to a UPI White House Weekly.

It was a day that will be talked about for generations to come. This week, America elected its first African American president - Illinois Senator Barack Hussein Obama. He sought election as one of the youngest presidents and defeated Republican Senator John McCain to become the 44th president of the United States. The 47-year-old was not well known four years ago, but grabbed the attention of the political world when he delivered the 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address. Obama and his running mate, Senator Joe Biden, will move into the Oval Office January 20th.

Obama's election not only made history, but it also redrew America's electoral divide. As polls closed on Tuesday from east to west, the president elect snatched states that President Bush had won in 2004 states like Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. He also turned the state of Indiana from red to blue something that hadn't been done since 1964. Battleground states like Ohio and Florida also went for the Illinois Senator. Overall, Obama grabbed about 63 million votes compared to McCain's 55 million.

Obama's 22-month campaign ended in Grant Park in Chicago where he delivered his acceptance speech. But instead of rousing the crowd the way he has on the campaign trail, he came to the stage with a new seriousness. He talked about the monumental task at hand, leading a country that is almost certainly in a recession and fighting long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His former opponent, Senator McCain conceded the presidential race to Obama in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. In his speech, he acknowledged the historical nature of the election results and congratulated Obama on his hard-fought victory.

Since Obama has secured a victory, he's now working to craft a transition team. Obama's reportedly looking to both sides of the aisle to fill his positions. Democratic Illinois congressman Rahm Emanuel is considered to be the front-runner for the White House chief of staff. But the President Elect is also thinking about bringing Republican Senators Chuck Hagel and Dick Lugar on board. That's according to sources close to Obama. The Illinois Senator is also reportedly considering Robert Gates, Bush's Defense Secretary, to his national security team.
