In China, I saw Tai Chi masters disable opponents at a distance without touching them using Qi. How does that fit into the idea that it is "nothing more than physical"?
I absolutely agree with what you say about kung fu. My point is that what kung fu misses is that Qi also contains information. Do a little research about some of the reserarch into paranormal psychology done at Duke and in Russia. Pretty solid evidence. So how does one explain the phenomena?
Perhaps Qi also moves information the way electromagnetic energy carries radio or TV information... or light carries holographic information. Just words to explain a phenomena.
Yes an open mind is required for advancement, but it doesn't mean we accept invalidated ideas as validated. Skepticism of things is healthy and a huge part of science, cynicism is not.
It is not difficult to believe there are other interactions, but without verifiable evidence there is no reason to believe. It isn't difficult for me to believe there are etherial faeries living in the woods around my house, but then again there is no reason to believe it either.
What does the apple story men? If I know my location, and all the other factors such as wind speed, spin, etc. I can predict if it will hit me in the head or not. The fact is the apple's motion is controlled by known and predictable forces that can be demonstrated over and over again. If I know the variables I can predict its motion and travel over and over.
With these so called energy fields we cannot do this, not even adequately with statistics.
Replying to your comment on kung fu, you are completely wrong on this aspect.
The "martial" aspect of kung fu was and is completely secondary to the main focus on Qi and other inner peace/bhuddist/health aspects. It is there for 3 reasons:
1. Self defense
2. Physical health
3. Channeling of the qi via some of the motions (e.g. Tai Chi).
Calling this view "limited" is extremely erroneous.
The fact is however, what they claim they achieve by qi, is nothing more than physical.
If you throw an apple into the air, just because you can't do the equations that predict it's going to fall doesn't mean it won't hit you on the head.
I remember reading "We don't believe in levitation, and the Tibetans don't believe in airplanes. It's all a matter of cultural perspective."
With the understanding we have of interactions at the subatomic level it is not difficult to believe that interactions may be going on that we just don't comprehend. So what? An open mind is required for advancement. Otherwise we would still go with the prevailing "scientific" notion that the sun revolved around the earth.
With due respect you are missing the point. In the late 1800's when electromagnetic forces were being investigated by MAxwell, the strong nuclear force could not be investigated or demonstrated scientifically. Yet it existed.
The phenomena of human energy fields has been documented in a wide variety of cultures and times with remarkably similar characteristics. It exists as an observed phenomena. You want to call it mystical... OK. It's a mystical observed phenomena.
Isn't that what I said? The results are inconclusive. That means using the scientific method the results can be neither proved or disproved. It does not invalidate the phenomena. It remains open for further investigation.
This is a very important point in all your discussions. Lack of scientific proof one way or another does not invalidate a phenomena. For example, science cannot definitely explain what happens in black holes. There are competing theories. Yet the black holes do exist.
