What is the point of doing that?
-
The sand bed has regions without oxygen which is essential for certain anaerobic bacteria for breaking down nitrates into harmless nitrogen. You can read up more on the nitrogen cycle in marine tanks.
Also, stirring up the sand may cause detritus materials to be exposed to the water thus encouraging algae bloom.

@jaelynnful before cleaning mix sand up (a hand is sufficient and will work better). The filter will pick up most and everything else will settle on top. lightly vacuum with gravel vacuum.

i just switched to sand in my tank, Walmart decor beach sand. Rinsed it obvioulsy so it doesnt cloud my water at all. looks nice, but i dont have fish or snails to stir it up for me so how often should i move it around/dig it up?

@AquariumForum I think the uneven look of the sand (as long as its the same depth) gives an awesome natural look to a tank. Evening out the sand makes it kinda plain.

take a piece of 1/2 inch pvc and a hair brush comb. Dont use a hanger the comb is much better. Then glue the handle of the comb up in the pvc
