From the musical "Carousel" by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein (book and lyrics). Preceded by some "voice Ping-Pong" the actual piece starts at 4:30.

  • @Zeobit It was famously sung with defiance during WWII by the People of London, and then with victory on both VE and VJ days by the crowds in front of Buckingham Palace. So "You'll Never Walk Alone" has a long wartime association with patriotic British music, so IMHO - it was a wonderful addition to the Proms. Not too different from "We'll Meet Again". SO glad they had this idea, it brings back so many memories of stories told me by my family members who spent WWII in the UK, esp. London.

  • I served this country for 16 years and when I watch the Proms, it makes me proud to have done so and call myself British

  • If it was ever sung during WWII it must have been very late since the song was only written and composed in 1945, but it is a wonderful song of defiance and I can imagine it being sung in situations like that. Very moving song.

  • @KittyAllChainedUp

    Thats true :)

  • The Kop better :D

  • I don't remember it being sung during the war.... at all Yes I'm old enough to remember

  • @KittyAllChainedUp Thank you for this! I never knew that. I've got several recordings of UK groups singing this song. I've always loved the song ....but sort of wondered at its popularity "over there". Makes the lyrics all the more powerful imagining that great generation of Londoners using it to help brace their nerves!

  • @KittyAllChainedUp I'm not sure how a song from Carousel was sung "in defiance during World War II" when the musical premiered on Broadway on 19 April 1945 (19 days before VE Day), or how it has any "long wartime association with patriotic British music".
