earth day Critical Mass 2011

Right through the middle of Antwerp, economic capital of Flanders,
runs the busiest motor highway of Europe.
300,000 trucks & cars per working day! Flemish government has been
ordered to appear for the European courts for air pollution. Complaints of noice pollution have been filed by citizens action groups. Since 2005 Action groups have been fighting government plans to
further increase traffic pressure in this populated area.
The mayor and city councel cooperates with Flemish government
against the population of Antwerp.. To celebrate the international day of the earth,
the monthly Critical Mass Bike Ride (CMBR) and other groups
organised a brafe spectacle: 2 young and daring people have been
toutering above the heavy traffic for almost ten minutes.
They have been identified by police authorities who try to make them
responsible for 3 accidents.
These accidents happened hundreds of meters away and almost everyday
there are comparable accidents due to the fact that this motorway runs at 140 % of its capacity.

The same weekend the tires of 250 SUV vehicles have also been flattened.
The action groups reclaim the city streets for urban population and children. To be continued!
