@twburr It has nothing to do with being lazy and selfish. Most people just want a decent living wage. Over the past decades, the increase of salaries has fallen far behind the rates of inflation, and people are actually working more hours per week than before. I think it's entirely reasonable to fight for benefits, vacation, etc, which will help to alleviate financial strain.

@twburr In my family's case, most gifts exchanged around the tree are homemade or have some kind of sentimental value. Gift-giving doesn't have to mean finding the most expensive item. I personally can't stand the consumerism of the holidays - for me it's a time to spend with one's family, not grappling with other desperate shoppers in a mad rush to be financially destitute.

@twburr I'm atheist and I celebrate Christmas with my family because it's the longest national holiday, which means it's one of the few opportunities we have to spend time together. The rest of my family is Christian so they also celebrate it for religious reasons, but that doesn't mean I have to. Besides, I don't just get gifts, I give them as well. Why should I miss out on a family reunion? Christmas is pagan in origin anyway, so if Christians can adopt it, so can groups who come after them.
