Barbra Streisand sings Harold Arlen. Over the years Barbra has recorded many Harold Arlen songs, including her favorite song "A Sleepin' Bee". Arlen provided the great melodies, and the lyrics were
from the best songwriters Johnny Mercer, E.Y. Harburg, and yes, Truman Capote. Here is a medley of
songs....

When a bee lies sleeping
In the palm of your hand
You're bewitched
And deep in love's long looked after land

Where you'll see a sun up sky
With a morning new
And where the days go laughing by
As love comes a-calling on you

Right as the rain
That falls from above
So real, so right is our love
It came like the spring
That breaks through the snow
I can't say what it may bring
I only know...I only know...

I'm gonna love you, like nobody loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain and deep as a river
Come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me
It was just one of those things
But don't ever bet me
Cause I'm gonna be true if you let me
You're gonna love me, like nobody's loved me
Rain or shine
Happy together, unhappy together
And won't it be fine
Days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or we're out of our money
I'm with you always
I'm with you rain or shine

My house is made of flowers
The warm winds carpet the floor
Whenever there´s spring showers
I open a rainbow door
The frog, the toad, the turtle
All make my home their home
My curtains are crape myrtle
And the fireflies fly 'neath my dome
I´ve never had money
And I´ll never need none
The moon is my lamp
And my clock is the sun
My home´s a home
For all those things
What grows, what flies, what sings
If it all sounds tempting
And it do you entice
I'd shout to the heaven
That it do make it nice
Won´t you come live with me
I´d come live with me,
If I were you...If I were you!

I had myself a true love
A true love who was something to see
I had myself a true love
At least that's what i kept on telling me
The first thing in the morning
I still try to think of a way to be with him
Some part of the evening
And that's the way i live through the day
I had myself a true love, but now he's gone
And left me for good
The lord knows i don't hear d those back yard
Whispers going round the neighborhood
There may be a lot of things i miss
A lot of things i don't know
But i do know this, now i ain't got no love
And once upon a time i had a true love

Drift from pillar to post
Sweetenin' water
Cherry wine
So helplessly
Thank you kindly suits me fine
What I wanted the most
Winds up a ghostly memory
My man is gone
And when your man is gone
Your world just falls apart
So any place I hang my hat is home

A sleepin' bee told me
I will walk with my feet off the ground
When my one true love
I has found.

1964: FUNNY GIRL premieres at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. Here is a short interview with
Diana Streisand Kind ( Born Ida Rosen) Barbra's mother
on that special occassion:
Interviewer: Well, Mama Streisand, what do you think about
this whole thing?
Mrs.Diana Streisand: "Well. I'm terribly elated."
Interviewer: "Where does the spark come from?"
Mrs. Diana Streisand: "Actually, her singing would come from her mother, and her acting ability would also stem from her mother. Her intelligence, however, stems from
her dear father, who was a PH.D. and a most spectacular
teacher who had helped many pupils on the road to gain
self-respect, since he once worked in the Elmira Reformatory as an assistant principal.
Interviewer: "Did he die when she was very young?"
Mrs. Diana Streisand: When she was fifteen months old...
While working in a camp one summer, and he was a great
loss to the teaching field...
Interviewer: " If he could have lived to see this night?"
Mrs. Diana Streisand: "Oh, well, he...he's just with us
right now. "

  • Over the years, Barbra Streisand has recorded an impressive selection of Harold

Arlen songs. Yet, she never recorded STORMY WEATHER, one of Arlen's most

popular songs, a huge hit for LENA HORNE in the mid 1940s. I have always wondered how Barbra would have sung that ballad blues lament.

  • Wow this is wonderful, great job!I collect Streisand photos and I have accumulated a lot over the years but there are some in here I've never even seen before.Could you possibly tell me where you got your photos?I would be very grateful to you. :-)

  • Thanks. You find Barbra Streisand photos in the most unexpected places. In my opinion the best researcher in the world re: Barbra is Matt Howe of the Barbra archives com. Many great photos in the 1960s magazines. Also see what photos were "frozen" from the Barbra's DVDs/ Try also checking foreign sources, overseas publications, 45 RPMs, EPs. Try checking mispellings "STRIESAND". Flickr google BING . People related to Barbra professionally Peter Matz, The Bergmans, Sondheim, Michel Legrand, etc.

  • Purists, you have a green light to get to 3:39 where Barbra is at her best.

  • Love love love every song on this with the possible exception of "Come Rain or Come Shine" -- obviously recorded in a later Streisand period when she strayed away from the purity of the original Broadway sound. The rest of the Harold Arlen tunes here are just incredible, especially with the early arrangements.

  • Sheer perfection.

  • Streisand and Arlen...a match made in heaven!

  • This is about the first song she ever sang for anyone and in an audition, this and "When Sunny Gets Blue" according to the Nellie Bly biography.

  • God I love Barbra Streisand. So beautiful with a voice to match and a theatrical talent and spunk that goes beyong. She has led a truly amazing life filled with the wonders of music. After this, all I can say is "Hello, gorgeous" :)

  • House of Flowers may be Streisand's greatest single vocal performance. The rapturous nature of the sound when she "shouts to the heavens" sends electricity down my spine. Unmatched!

  • Great to see the pics of the rooms of her various homes- you don't see those too often....

  • THANK YOU!
