The Cowboys have drafted linebackers ad neaseum the past couple of years. Some have worked out tremendously like Demarcus Ware while others have not like Barbie Carpenter. With the Cowboys focused on a youth movement, expect us to snag multiple linebackers who will probably see Sp Teams time.

The current depth chart has the Cowboys strong at the OLB slot with Ware,Ellis, and Spencer. The inside has Bradie, Stewart, Brooking, and Rogers. Carpenter and Ellis have been on the rumor mill quite a bit a of late. Ellis, at age 34, seems very expendable to open up PT for Spencer. I expect the Cowboys to snag a couple of linebackers with their many picks. I wouldn't necessarily think they will be the premium first day picks but rather second day guys with some upside and Sp Teams ability.

The beauty of this new regime however is that if value presents itself on Day One, we will not be afraid to pounce. Just look at last years draft when we selected Felix Jones with Barber coming off an All Pro Season along with Mike Jenkins after trading for Pac Man Jones.

These guys are the ones you should keep an eye on. I have seen comments on where we should go and name brand types of players. Although I love Patrick Chung, its highly unlikely he resides with this team because we simply are not looking for that kind of player. I will delve more into this as the draft approaches.

ILB Prospects-

Jason Phillips TCU- This guy is a tackling machine. He is also a leader and can contribute on Sp Teams. The Cowboys team surgeon oversaw his meniscus surgery. He is projected in the 4th or 5th. With multiple picks in both rounds, expect him to be selected.

Darry Beckwith LSU- His numbers do not tell a story of a high second round pick. Seems to be the kind of player that has the measurables and football IQ but just hasn't put it together. Perhaps he is a square peg in a round hole and the 34 is what the Doc ordered. I personally dont think so.

Clay Matthews Jr- He is a guy you all know I have been really high on. Bloodlines, ability, work ethic are there. He certainly was on the bee line to Round 1 until the positive tests came back. This could drop him and may land in our lap. I see him as the type of OLB that can destroy TE's but also get to the QB. I have him as ILB due to versatility.

Brian Cushing- See above minus the bloodlines. Intriguing if they fall to 51.

Marcus Freeman- This guy is viewed almost like a jack of all trades..master of none. Versatile with speed to get to the ball carrier. Sp Teams dynamo. May have been overshadowed a touch by Laurinaitis. Second round prospect and I am not so sure he is that much better than a Jason Phillips.

OLB-

Clint Sintim- This guy is skyrocketing up draft boards. Seems more of a one trick pony being a pass rusher. Could however move inside. Seems similar in that regard to Bradie James. At pick 51, he could be a steal.

Jason Williams- This guy from Western Illinois MUST be taken in Rnd 3. Why do I say that? How about a 39 inch vertical and a 4.49 40. I have his video on my page. His coach talks about him covering 2 receivers (not 2 guys at once LOL). He is the answer to the Kevin Burnett position. Perhaps round 3 is early for him. I wouldnt want to take a chance. Burnett was instrumental in our nickel D. This guy has that ability.

Lawrence Sidbury- A more traditional OLB as a pass rusher. Will have to be a conversion type of player much like Ware was coming from small school DL. His spin move is legendary. He is more likely to be selected in round 4 or 5 than using a higher pick on this position.

Cody Brown- This guy seems to be my favorite of the conversion OLB types. 16.5 TFLs and 11 sacks speak volumes to me. Going in practice against NFL prospect Beatty is certainly going to help as well. Seems like a high character prospect as well.

  • After I made this vid I saw we are hot for Jasper Brinkley who is the thumper we need. We need both a thumper and a speedy cover guy like Williams. Phillips I think is going to be the guy though when all is said and done.

  • Youtube this LB from FAU (Florida Athletic University) Frantz Joseph.

    I LIKE this guy.

I really don't think we need a guy whose purely a nickel LB but can't be a 3-4 ILB, I believe that Carp is capable of that. We need a THUMPER inside who plays with an attitude. Joseph can be that guy.
