The New Century Chamber Orchestra and Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, who embark upon their second season together this September, are thrilled to present their first recording: Together.
Together features the world premiere recording of Brazilian composer Clarice Assads "Impressions".
Assad was appointed as the ensemble's first Featured Composer under Ms. Salerno-Sonnenbergs tenure, and the work was commissioned especially for the ensemble. Together also includes Piazzollas "Four Seasons of Buenos Aires", Bartoks "Romanian Folk Dances", and Gershwins "Bess, You is My Woman Now."
Piazzolla's "Four Seasons of Buenos Aires" were originally written as four separate pieces and reorchestrated in the 1990s for the violinist Gidon Kremer. Just now emerging as a tour de force in the violin literature, the works feature Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg as violin soloist who played with ferocious beauty in Joshua Kosmans San Francisco Chronicle review of New Century's live performances in September 2008. Bartok's virtuosic "Romanian Folk Dances" gets a colorful twist in this recording, where Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg has adjusted the original orchestration to offer solos to New Century musicians in various sections. This joyful recording concludes with Gershwin's "Bess, You Is My Woman Now", in David Rimelis orchestration of Jascha Heifetzs arrangement for violin and piano, featuring Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg as the soloist and violin voice of Porgy.
CDs are available through the orchestra's website at http://www.ncco.org, online at ArkivMusic and Amazon.com, and at your local Barnes & Noble.
