Ebert and Roper review the upcoming sequel to Batman Begins "The Dark Knight".

Since I had posted Siskel and Ebert's review of Batman Mask of The Phantasm (The most under appreciated of all the Batman Movies) I thought it would be cool to post this review of the upcoming Dark Knight movie.

Richard Roper says that the film deserves a best movie oscar nomination

  • The Dark Knight gets ★★★★ out of ★★★★

  • I am tired of the Batman 1989 fans. There isn't even a comparison. This movie is on a whole different level, and just because it doesn't have the Gothic atmosphere and it has massive popularity doesn't mean it's overrated. Some things can actually achieve the set hype level, although they are really rare. Though it strives for a realistic atmosphere, it explores the true nature of the Batman mythology, more-so than any other medium up to that point. Arkham City since than has tried to do so.

  • @clemsonman0503 I agree. These aren't just excellent superhero films; they're excellent FILMS, period. It wouldn't matter what genre they were.

  • @Hoboinaboxdestroyer finally. someone else besides me who thinks that way.

  • The Dark Knight is a amazing sequel in everyday. It is darker and edgier. Heath Ledger truly earned the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. His Joker is one of the most frightening villains in the history of film right up there with Hannibal Lector!

  • FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP COMPARING THE DIFFERENT MOVIES!!!! They are all fucking awesome and none is better than the other. They are all in different leagues set apart from each other.

  • @Abr022575 P.S. Apparently you forgot the ending to TDK. "Because HE'S NOT A HERO, he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a dark knight."

  • @Abr022575 The definition does not have to be fallen through entirely if it is just trying to take influence in style. That said, the Burton films portray Batman as a hero as well. The film just obscures this keeping him mysterious. I believe this was not intentional, and fans have the false lead in believing it was. The Nolan films dive into the psyche and intentions of Batman like the Frank Miller comic, "Year 1". What Batman ultimately wants it for good to be done, thus he is sympathetic.

  • @clemsonman0503 Batman and noir don't really fit IMO. Batman is supposed to be a hero and by definiton in the noir universe, there are no heroes. As dark as the undercurrents are in Nolan's flms, there is still a degree of admiration and triumphalism assigned to Batman.

  • @Abr022575 The Nolan pictures haven't taken that much of a stab either, aside from the bullet in the wall forensics. The film doesn't need to have detective work per say, but it seemed that Burton was just "all over the place" in trying to find a way to properly envision the comic into film. Don't forget though, one of Burton's greatest flaws is style over substance, it's just done on a much more subtle note than directors who are normally criticized for such problems.

  • @Abr022575 see, one of the most interesting aspects I found in the Burton films wasn't even fully executed in my opinion: the film noir. Burton and whoever was assigned cinematography for the picture tried to pull off this look since Batman is in fact a detective (the world's greatest) but there was no attempt to showcase his detective work to complement the noir setting, it was just straight up crime fighting with a bit of wacky antics.

  • @clemsonman0503 there's no doubt the newer batmans are better. But Batman '89 is a formidable achievement. It plays like 40s film noir. The tone is different. It's good, and yes, it is lesser.
