  • I'd say that thing has definitely paid for itself in 19 years holy crap.

  • @scoutII345 It still produces well over 200+ loads a day. Record was 259 loads on an 8 hour shift! It may be old, but in its day it was a very highly advanced machine.

  • Ive heard that caterpillar are making a mining shovel series ranging from 100 tons to 800 tons i hope that they wont be as faulty as the 5100's back in the 1990's

  • Origionally that was the case, but Cat bought Bucyrus so they will be marketing the old O&K line.

  • Do any of these mines crush the rock and sell it for construction purposes? That light gray stuff looks like it could be good base rock for roadbuilding. Seems like as long as they are blasting, loading and hauling it off they could run some of it through a crusher and make a little extra dough.

  • Surprisingly no, but that is a good idea. Main reason why the rock doesnt get crushed and sold is because it's used to backfill the old pit with. Where I work my boss wants to start crushing the grey rock and selling it to the state.

  • @Jeff1782 Take lessons from you??? That operator has forgotten more than you ever knew. That machine is 19 yrs old and still produces 20 loads per hour which is more than is expected of that machine. Speed isn't everything. Being smooth and not smashing the machine means alot for production!!!

  • It's not the operator that's slow, that's as fast as that machine will run. It's not a brand new machine.

  • German engineering is by far the best in mining!

  • The thing that never ceases to amaze me is the fact that some guy has sat down with a piece of paper and a pencil and designed this machine!

There are some clever people in the world
