Nick Villani knew little about Providence Healthcare when approached in 1995 by a friend to join the organization's Foundation Board of Directors. Resisting then to take on a new commitment, Nick agreed to just one year. But during his first tour of Providence, when he saw how caring one volunteer was with an Alzheimer's patient, Nick wanted to do more. "Her genuine compassion resonated with me," he said at the time. "I realized I wasn't able to volunteer in that capacity, but I knew I could make a difference through fundraising."
From 1995 until his death in December 2010, Nick's enthusiasm for Providence and his spirit of philanthropy grew stronger. He served as Vice-Chair and Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors, and his leadership role continued when he was named Honorary Chair in 2008. He was also on the planning committee for all three of Providence's signature fundraising events for over 10 years.
Besides working as a volunteer, Nick also invested in the future of Providence through financial contributions, both his own and by inspiring others to do the same. One of his most notable accomplishments was the Impossible Dream event at the 2007 Silver Ball, which raised a net amount of $1.5 million to mark the 150th anniversary of Providence.
This remarkable goal was achieved through Nick's vision, inspiration and leadership, as he secured sponsors, donors and guests, and was instrumental in planning and executing this major fundraiser.
Nick passed away peacefully on December 17, 2010. His sense of humour, strong values and leadership will be missed.
In his own words, this message was read at his funeral Mass: "Providence is a truly magnificent facility with outstanding people who provide loving, compassionate care and make all the residents and patients live their lives with selfrespect and dignity. They always, and I truly mean always, made me feel loved and wanted. I want to thank everyone for being my friend, not only for your kindness and thoughtfulness but particularly for giving me your unconditional love."
