goodvibrato: when used right, it can also be used to color your sound. I have been getting quite good results since I have been using the MV-8800 Master Tool Kit ; which has a multiband compressor built in. At the other hand ; when used badly, it can also be used to paint the mix brown ; it's a tool as any other; abuse it or overuse it and it can backfire. Don't use it at all and you'll miss all those advantages (needed) to be "broadcast ready 'quality'" with your productions...

I am using this and I am getting some crackle at the higher frequencies - any ideas on how to prevent this?

yeah, as we can hear, it gets a lot better in 2:13 :D on the left you can see how it clips and hear how it gets distorted!!! in a demo you should use this tool correctly I think :D

a problem im having is that my vocals will have peeks like if a say something with a T or something and yes i have a pop filter but its still very loud and harsh on the ears... when i try to compress it the whole track is compressed... do u have any advice?

Compression is used for evening out the volume of the track. For example, it will make the quieter parts louder and the louder parts quieter. If done right, it will allow you to boost the overall level of the track without sacrificing too much of the dynamics. Use too much compression and the track will sound squashy.
