CHLOE McCARDEL
22nd July 2010

I joined the Viking Princess at Dover Harbour and we were soon joined by the CHLOE McCARDEL accompanied by her boyfriend and trainer Paul McQueeney and Greg Martini, a camera man from Australian Channel 9 TV.
As Chloe was attempting a multiple crossing we left at night to fit into a perfect weather window.
The weather was good and we left Dover Harbour and steamed to Samphire Hoe where Chloe entered the water at 20:18.

As Chloe was starting at night a light stick were attached to her costume and a flashing light to her goggles. Almost at once Chloe experienced difficulties with her hat and goggles, which persisted for many hours until she changed them 5 hours later. Her hat kept riding up, threatening to come off.
Chloe set off at 68 Strokes Per Minute, a pace she was more or less to maintain throughout both legs of her swim. And so, at this pace we headed south, the sea was slightly choppy but nothing strenuous, the weather was warm and as the sun set behind us Chloe head south, entering the South West Shipping lane at 23:00.
The SW lane was unusually quiet with very little shipping showing on the radar and the tide was slight enough for us to make a fairly straight crossing.
At 01:30 Chloe changed her cap and goggles solving the irritating rising cap problem.

The Viking Princess had spot lights shining on the sea illuminating the area around Chloe and even at night it was possible to see the jelly fish she was sharing the channel with. Chloe seemed unaware of them until she passed directly over a monster about 18 inches long that gave her quite a shock.
She was lucky however, as when she finished her swim she told me she hadn't been stung at all.

At 01:55 Chloe entered the North East lane ant we had a brief shower of rain. The jellyfish maintained their constant presence throughout the centre of the channel.
And at 04:00 in first light France was clearly growing larger. Chloe was still maintaining a solid regular stroke and the absence of shipping in the North East lane certainly helped.

At 05:05 we entered the French Coastal waters well to the east of the Cape with the Abbeyville buoy in view off in the distance on the port.
Chloe was concerned that she might miss the cape so she increased her stroke rate to 76.

Ray lowered the dingy at 05:05 to escort Chloe in to land her on the cape to complete her first leg of her multiple crossing attempt.
She landed at 06:55 after an uneventful night crossing taking 10 hours and 37 minutes.
After a short pause to put on fresh grease and friction patches Chloe re-entered the water for the second leg of her swim.
Whilst her initial crossing had been at night her return was a daylight run, visible tiring but maintain a constant pace she headed north, crossing the shipping lanes and with England clearly in sight we entered the final stretch, up to this moment Chloe had been considering an attempt at a three way crossing (straight back to France again) and with this in mind she was pushing herself to stay within the record time of a three way crossing. I personally believe this was a mistake for as she finally went ashore, back on the same beach she had started from (a real achievement by the Pilot, Reg) she realised she didn't have the strength for another crossing. Perhaps if she had paced herself she might have had the strength to carry on.
Nevertheless, her two way crossing was a magnificent achievement, a feat of endurance rarely achieved and I was proud to have been present.
