Without being seated next to you, all I can do is encourage you to take your time, remember its a flat knot, and patiently draw up each cord until the look of the knot takes shape. Outside of that, use a 1/4 inch solid braid nylonrope (gotten at most hardware stores) to tie the piece. Flimsy cotton cord or string just won't due for this.

How long should the string be? The rope I have is about a meter and a half long and all I get is a floppy tangled mess :/

@Shindai - My rope (1/4 inch solid braid nylon) was about 6 feet long
