A grid of LEDs is wired with row & column pins. Each row is lit in turn by taking a pin HIGH while the rest are low. To light an LED in the row the column pin is taken LOW to act as a current sink. Each row is lit for about 3ms. The patterns are programmed with a 2D arrays of bytes. Code is here: http://paulm.com/inchoate/2008/03/arduino_showing_multiplexed_led_mat.html

  • I can not even get a simple 4 LED array to even sequence in any pattern. When I ask folks for info I am told look at Adafruit or Arduino sites in the blogs etc. I can not even get anyone to respond with the simplest of explaination for the beginner, it appears to be either beneath them or they really don't know.

  • @1foxtrot70 have you posted up code, pin connections, what other components, circuit diagrams, etc? Have you got a single LED on/off? The more info you provide the more folks can help. A lot of local dorkbot (dorkbot.org) or hackerspaces are good places to find people that know about arduino, and more. Hope that helps

  • There's some code on the blog entry, including an explanation of what's going on -- check the "more info" link above for the video.

  • Hi it s great . Ii i would like this one can you send connecting diagram saimportakal@yahoo.com

  • @1foxtrot70 - I have done that, for a short time I was able to get a sequencing but, then it appears the chip became unstable and it all quit. I had spent so much time on it e.g. 2 months I have all but given up.

  • That is amazing! I was about to criticize because it has no MUX And yet you are still multiplexing. Bravo!

  • very cool. Can you explain how multiplex works. In a non-pro language? thx.

  • Hi i did this for almost all the the alphabet.

    Would you like my code?

    it is quite long.

  • This is so cool!

I have ben trying to make a 5 by 4 led matrex with the arduino.

THe cool thing is that it doesent use any ic just 9 pins and alot of code.
