SERIOS: high performance Z- & Phi-axis actuator by MECAL

MECAL realized the SERIOS, an end-effector that fits a.o. high-end pick and place platforms.

It consists of a 2D air bearing system that allows the pick & place nozzle to translate 10 mm in Z-direction and 350 degrees in phi-direction. The combination of a contactless height measurement system, low moving mass of 350 g and a customized 2D-actuator and encoder results in a system with the specifications shown below.

- Absolute positioning accuracy in Z-direction: +/- 3 micrometer

- Acceleration in Z-direction: 100 m/s2

- Positioning accuracy in phi-direction: +/- 1 mrad

- Angular acceleration: 5000 rad/s2

- Bandwidth: 200 Hz

Moreover, a coaxial camera and optics can be integrated in the hollow rotor/translator for the purpose of planar position feedback or process inspection.
