Deep in Brazil's jungles, one the world's last remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed for the first time from the air.

The pictures show tribesmen, painted red head to toe, aiming longbows at the aircraft circling above.

The tribe was found in the far western Amazon jungle, near the Peruvian border, Brazil's department for Indian affairs said Thursday.

The region they were found in was an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area, said the government foundation known as Funai.

Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and an area of crops. It is not known which tribe the group belonged to.

"Four distinct isolated peoples exist in this region, whom we have accompanied for 20 years," Funai expert Jose Carlos Meirelles Junior said in a statement.

Funai does not make contact with indigenous people and prevents invasions of their lands, to ensure total autonomy for the tribes, the foundation said.

There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, said Survival International, a group that works to protect the human rights of tribal people.

Survival International said that the tribes in Brazil are in danger from illegal logging in Peru. They say the logging is driving uncontacted tribes over the Peru border and could lead to conflict with the 500 uncontacted people living on the Brazilian side.

  • They can be seen at Huffington post. So, again, nice try. Just look at the first photo. There are potted plants next to hut

  • Um, where is the actual video of the people? These are only still photos. Nice try. But am curious as to what the motive is of this news. Its obviously fake. And i'll tell you why. The other photos that came out of these 'areas', the trees are not to scale with these "huts".

  • @elcalvo3d it doesn't matter if we go there the aboriginals would die from smallpox and modern desesis that we are immune to.

  • @Antimidation if they ever transition into modern society which I highly doubt will ever happen if we leave them alone but if they do it will be slow and gradual...can't just air drop medicine and ipods.....what if they are allergic to some of the medicine? That's the thing about people we know nothing about.....isolation means that they will be sensitive to anything foreign, including disease and sickness or anything we might consider trivial would wipe them out.

  • We need to leave them alone for sure. It's up to them to make contact, not us. Unfortunately....its likely contact will be made by someone other than a humanitarian that is purposely interested in sharing language and culture, probably some jerk with a hunting rifle who thinks he owns their land.

  • I really hope they didn't scare the tribe and have to relocate. I bet those people I live in peace.

  • @TheWidowsPeak You still need the coordinates of their tribe, good luck making past the jungle without sleep, and you'll probably die in your sleep by them or animals, even if you get to them, they will probably view you as an alien and kill you.
