This song is taken from an album of previously unreleased material that was first issued on "RCA APL1-1778" in 1976. Though the songs themselves are from the period 1969-70, and recorded during sessions for the albums; Canned Wheat(1969), and American Woman(1970). By 1976 The Guess Who were all but history so RCA started to raid its corporate vaults for material to release before the band lost all of its fan base and sales potential.
Several of the songs off this compilation LP had "Hit" potential written all over them, including "Silver Bird"...so I'm not entirely sure why they didn't appear on any of the aforementioned albums, or at the very least released as singles.

This song has always been a favorite of mine.

  • It seems like every youtube mix doesn't show off the harmonies for the chorus which are just beautiful. But STILL, fantastic end-of-the-night song here. Love it.

  • @rezamatic

Not sure what you mean by "It seems like every youtube mix doesn't show off the harmonies for the chorus", as this is the original version of this song. Also, not sure what you men by a "YouTube Mix"...as this is ripped from my personal album "The Guess Who - The Way They Were RCA APL1-1778 - Silver Bird"...originally recorded in 1969 (released 1976). It was never released as a single, nor did it ever appear on any albums before this one.

  • The song is from 1969. Their best. Never made a big splash in the States.

    A very underappreciated Canadian group.

Thanks for the comment, but you should know they've never been under-appreciated here in Canada. Their popularity has never diminished this side of the border, though over the last 30 years or so it may have in the US.

One of my favorite Guess Who albums is "Live at the Paramount", which was recorded live at the Paramount Theater in Seattle Washington.

  • Don't know how else to put it, but Randy was just an "expressive" guitar player. Kurt Winter was great, but Randy was able to put some emotion in, that could never be replaced.

  • @liberty1866 Actually had this unreleased album comeout, the criticial consensus is that it would've set the group back. Share the Land, with a revamped lineup of Winter and Leskiw on guitar. became a much stronger followup, with more edge and a string of hit singles, including the title song, Bus Rider, Hand Me Down World,& Hang on to your life. This is a pleasant folksy little ballad, and there are a few good cuts, but it's release after AW would have hurt not helped the band's momentum.

  • Over the decades I would occasionally hear this song played on the radio, but I never knew who the artists were, or the name of the it. I really liked this song and so dearly wanted a copy of it. Thank you for posting this wonderful song so that I could find it , solve the mystery of the name and artists, and listen to it again!

  • Esto es una auténtica preciosidad ;-)

  • Not many words required to endorse this gem. We'll let the music speak for itself.

    :)))

  • One of my favorite vocals...

    Thanks for sharing!

  • @angusthethird This wasn't released until 1976 due to Randy Bachman, leaving the band. This was the follow up to American Woman, too bad it was shelved they were in the prime of their career. This probably would have been a big hit. Burton Cummings is one the great voices in Pop / Rock history. He and the band have never gotten the respect they deserve. I have friends in Canada, the band there is as highly regarded as the Beatles. And by the way, Thanks for posting.

  • I have that album on LP and I love to listening to that song. About time somebody posted it on youtube. Thanks mate :)
