Paul Gallico's "The Snow goose" story was first published in The Saturday Evening Post in 1940 and won the O. Henry award in 1941. He lived long enough to see his timeless short story come to life. Well directed and acted, this made for TV movie won a Golden Globe award and Jenny Agutter was awarded an Emmy for her performance. The movie was also Emmy nominated in 8 other categories.
Heartfelt and wonderfully done movie about a lonely man Philip Rhayadar (Richard Harris) who helps local girl Frith (Jenny Agutter) rescue a wounded goose from hunters. Enjoy.

  • Didn't the Nazis bomb his lighthouse and everything was destroyed? Except the picture of her.

  • @Prancer1231 You are correct. The lighthouse was destroyed except for the painting. The made for TV movie is "based-on". Thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you mark 042683 for uploading this long-lost BBC/Hallmark Hall of Fame show. Such a good adaptation of Paul Gallico's short story. I remember weeping at the end when I saw it as a kid, and it made me do the same 30+ years later when I watched it just now. It seems You Tube is now one of the few places one can see unjustly out-of-print films and videos like this. What can be done to get this great stuff re-issued on DVD? Okay, now I need to go find more tissues...snff.

  • @valkwahu1 Thanks for the nice comment... When you "get" or understand this movie it makes one realize the depth of what is taking place in the story and can become an emotional experience.

  • Some interesting observations! The parallel between the characters is, in my opinion the key to understanding this story. I found the painting to be interesting also as Frith carries the artwork at the end. The artwork, a symbol of both simplicity and what is "important" in life.

  • I waited 39 years to see this film again. They should give mark042683 a medal for finally making it available. Everyone needs to see it.

  • I never noticed how beautiful the soundtrack was before. But having seen the film before, I practically had to start getting the tissues out right from the get go.

  • First time I've seen this movie in decades . Very Good movie, and Sad !

  • I found and watched this because im a harris fan, but collectively it surpassed all expectations, charming and beautiful, thankyou

  • Thanks for posting this little treasure!

  • Thank you so much for posting this - I have been searching for it for some years now and none of the major movie sites have copies of it. And for some reason, it features in neither of Richard Harris' or Jenny Agutter's filmographies. I can remember seeing it when it was first shown on BBC and it has always had a haunting place in my memory. Again, thank you so much for your contribution.

  • My sentiments are reflected in so many of the comments! I too saw this in 1971 and have never forgotten it. Thank you so much for making it available for viewing. Such a touching and tender film. Loved it just as much 40 years later!

  • I cried my ass off when I read the book and I cried my ass off again just now watching it for the first time on Youtube. Of course, I had the Camel theme music playing in my head both times. Thank you so much for uploading this. I have been waiting 29 years to see it (I got into Camel back in 1982).

  • beautiful....thank you for putting this on.

  • I believe the reason it was never released on video was to do with a legal fight over the rights... Or something similar. I believe Hallmark own it right now but won't/can't release it... I too watched it as a teenager. Thrilled you posted it here... Both book and movie are timeless treasures. Thank you...

  • 40 years later, and I still cried my eyes out. Some things don't stand the test of time, but this movie sure did. It has stayed with me all these years, and I never thought I'd get to see it again. Thank you so much for posting it.
