My newly acquired fretless Deering Goodtime 5 string. I've only had it for around a week, so I thought I'd put down a posting to measure my progress over time as a banjo player. (I've only had my Dulcijo up until now so I'm a complete novice on banjo. )

  • Nicely done. I cheat. I use frets!

  • @willsoflo thanks, I would probably have been wiser to get myself a fretted banjo, te fretless is great, but tricky. I'm still very much a novice. Cheers, Paul

  • nice sound very good

  • @fralin1966 Thanks, that's kind of you....if I were to record it again, I'd prefer it a little faster, I think this drags a bit. cheers and happy new year! Paul

  • Really nice sound and playing there, Miles. Really liked it. You have a good feel for this stuff. More, please.

  • @classicbanjoRM That's very kind Rob, and particularly gratifying coming from a player of your quality. The name is Paul by the way, the joke is that my playing has ***king miles ta go yet!!

  • thanks Paul, I appreciate your encouragement. The dulcijo playing has really helped with the banjo, although I'm still finding it tough to stay in tune on the fretless.

  • Well, if you're a complete novice on banjo and have only been playing fretless for a week, it's a sure thing that you'll be attaining to marvelous heights. You've already got a very confident rhythm and good intonation. The banjo sounds good; you're getting a nice bluesy moan out of those slides - a sound that's impossible to achieve on a fretted banjo. Keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing your future efforts and seeing how you're style evolves.
