I thought I'd record a demo with the Duotone when I have it loaded with EL84's (instead of EL34's) and yellow jackets. Here is the gear I used.
Gibson SG Standard : H&K Duotone : Shure SM57 (speaker) & AKG Perception 100 (room) : M-Audio FastTrack : Sony Acid Pro
The speaker mic (SM57) is panned to the left and the room mic (Perception 100) is panned to the right. I added no EQs or effects in Acid Pro (unlike my previous demo where I added a post EQ). I tried to play in an array of styles to showcase all the abilities of the amp.

  • 2:30 to 3:45 was that improvised or is it part of a song? or is this whole video a cover of a song?

  • @billykim100 the first one was just picking apart a typical G major chord progression. The second was an old riff I wrote for an acoustic song.

  • @montywilt Thanks for the reply!

  • @Pianoblacks I used yellow jackets and didn't need to rebias. There is a significant loss in volume. I did the technique because the amp was my personal practice amp. The 84s hardly had an effect on the tone, thus I recommend only doing it if you are trying to cut volume.

I used to own the triamp 2 years ago. I owned it for 4 years. The duotone is roughly channel 1a and 3a of the triamp. Not identical, but close. I sold both the triamp and my duotone for 2 oranges and a vox.

  • @Pianoblacks and also...

    1) Do you like the amp with EL34 or EL84? Im curious about putting yellow jackets in mine just for playing around. The only thing stopping me from doing that is... I play at very loud places, will the droppage in wattage from EL84 be a lot quiter than the EL34?

    2) I see you got the triamp now... is it true the Duotone has the channel 1a and 3b from the triamp?

Thanks dude, I hope to hear from you.

  • Cool video. Did you like the cleans after you switch to EL84's?

And I assume with the yellow jackets, you don't need to rebias the amp right?

  • @dariom86 Use your ears dude. It can definitely get in that realm, and beyond. Listen to a Japanese band called Anthem. The guitarist, Akio Shimizu, uses a Duotone in all the albums after 2000. He gets a crushing tone out of it. Look him up...he's ALWAYS with that duotone.

  • @steveEsp yeah, a source that hasn't been amplified will not have enough current to cause damage to anything.

  • @montywilt correct! my mind must have went blank as i connected the microphone. It is ok though, i tried it in my friends studio, there is nothing wrong with it...guess i got lucky! i gotta be more careful. Thanks for helping me though! much appreciated.

  • @steveEsp So you sent an electrical current to the SM57? I don't know how this is possible. There is no such thing as an input being an output as well. The only way you could have done this is having the SM57 hooked up to an output. Correct?
