The USS Orion was a submarine tender that was in the U.S. Naval Fleet from 1943 to 1993. At the time that she was decommissioned she was the oldest active ship in the Naval Fleet. I served on her from 1977-80. The Orion was a great ship to serve on. This video is of a cruise taken after finishing overhaul in Norfolk, Virginia. We were heading back to our home port of Charleston, S.C. Family members were allowed to travel with us on this cruise. In the film, which was shot on Super 8mm, you will see a young boy. He was the son of one of our crew members.

  • I served on her from 1971-1975.Home port Charleston S.C.Have many fond memories of being aboard.May her memories live long, and a salute to all that served her.

  • I served aboard her and was one of the very last to leave her when she was decomissioned. I rode her from Italy to Gibraltar, the Azores, across the Atlantic to Bermuda, and Norfolk. She was a sound ship.

  • Great video, my father was on this same years you were as a machinist mate. He sailed it to Italy and came home on the Gilmore.
