A cautionary tale.
fo'c'sle song type

*********
Addendum, Sept. 8, 2009:
This turns out to be the first song I recorded as part of my "Stan Hugill's 'Shanties from the Seven Seas' Project." See here:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=58B55DD66F22060C

Back then, I was treating Hugill's multiple variations/examples of songs (along with other examples from recordings, books, and live performers) as all references from which to build an interpretation. I still do. However, as the project developed, I became more committed to representing and thus ~distinguishing~ each of Hugill's variations.

Note that this one, then, was more of a combination of the melody of this version, and most of its lyrics...combined with some lyrics from the "Frisco" version, melodic changes based on recorded versions, and the addition of a full chorus (i.e. as in the Frisco version). Strictly speaking, this version as presented by Hugill was in reference to Liverpool, mentioned the crimp Rapper Brown, and had no chorus.

  • keep it up man! sounds like you could do a lot better if you kept practicing, but you are good at singing and playing at the same time!

  • I definitely need more practice! I have been mainly practicing my singing since then, and I have gotten better at that, but the banjo is still pretty weak :) Thanks for your support.

  • good rough-&-ready version, love your expression at the end... hilarious.

  • Raw and real. Love it.

  • I can't wait to get a chance to sit down and record this song.

  • hult, I did not have to look up any slang. I understood every word of that song. I felt that way, back then. Now, that I'm retired, I wan't to go back to sea! What a joke. Just to see the green flash at dawn, again. To really see the stars, at night. To hear the "whish" of the water against the hull when you go to sleep. (I don't sleep too well these days).Go to sea? I'd jump at the chance. =Stefan=

  • aye matie! nice job :)
