Boxers don't really have the say about being kicked in the hands, wouldn't you think? Kick-boxers do - and they OBVIOUSLY don't mind, since they keep them UP ;-)

I'm not saying that you should block every hit/kick, far from that! But if I'm to chose between the chance of being hit in the hand and be less "technical" fighter OR get kicked in the head, being a crisp "technician" - PLEASE!!! ;-))

By the way, "bait" is either expendable or protectable! Otherwise it's an OPENING!

  • @grozde actually Ive been through several martial arts including boxing so yes I have fought with my hands up, it just doesnt benefit you much in competition style TKD. Of course anything is better than getting knocked out but getting out of the way is better than letting your opponent hit you regardless of how "fragile" your hands are even boxers wouldnt disagree with that. What you see as open is bait, if you dont understand that then you wouldn't make much of a good technical fighter ;)

  • @leka1622

So your 20+ years of experience say that it's better not to block but to move away, so it's better to get KO'd than to block??

Also, when you keep your hands high, you need to block less, because people would rarely kick at your hands! And even if they do - it's much less damaging than a body or a head blow! And your hands are not as fragile as U think!

It seems that YOU are arguing about something U know nothing about: have you tried learning and fighting with your hands UP?! ;-)

  • @grozde well your making an argument of ignorance "I dont know why so it must be" kind of thing, Im talking to you from 20+ years of Taekwondo experience Ive been on both the junior and senior national team. Getting out of the way is better than blocking period, you take no damage and leave your opponent open to counter attacks. Also if youre keeping your hands up to prevent being hit you ARE blocking lol. It seems like your trying to make arguments about something you know nothing about.

  • @leka1622

    PLEASE!

    1. If your hands are slower than someone's legs - you're DEFINITELY doing something wrong!

    2. I'm not even talking about blocking, nor about punching, but about keeping your hands between you and him! This offers at least some cover even if you do nothing else! And, by the way, you can see here on YT TKD stars teaching people NOT to even try and kick somebody's guard, but kick where there's an opening! So obviously the guard WOULD prevent you from being kicked!

  • @grozde those kicks happen VERY fast if you're trying to catch them with blocks you will definitely get knocked out its much better/easier and requires less effort on your part to get out of the way instead. Secondly you cannot punch in the face holding up a guard in a clench in teakwondo in pointless you have to remember you're looking at a sport not a death match, asking why you dont hold your hands up in Taekwondo is like asking why boxers dont kick its just the way the game is played.

  • @FakeLemonz

    Precisely!

Sp how come they keep hands up in guard "against" the boards and don't ever keep them up to protect against a sparing partner/competitor?!...

I mean, they can keep hands behind their backs when boardbreaking, but in a sparring wouldn't it be wiser to keep them up - you know, like in any other striking fighting sport... (bar Tae Kion and Kapoeira) This way they'd not be so easily KOd. That's my entire point.

  • @grozde i don't consider fighting against boards 'actual fight',,

  • @FakeLemonz

So... it's a real fight against the boards - hence "hands up", but not a "real fight" when sparing - so you go "hands down" and get KNOCKED OUT???

    How smart is that?!!!
