This is footage taken at the National Hurricane Center (then located in Coral Gables, Florida) on the morning of July 23, 1985 as Tropical Storm Bob was impacting South Florida. Neil Frank, director of the Hurricane Center at the time, can be heard (and seen) talking on the phone to local government officials. Storm chaser Jim Leonard is also in the background.

  • we moved during bob. we were in jacksonville. i can remember having to go between rain bands, and drying everything off as we brought it in to the house.

  • Wow ... That brings back memories of 1985! I just moved to S FL (from NY) at 15 y/o a week before Bob! I remember taking my bike to Pompano beach to watch the storm and check waves. Niel Frank was such a cool guy, flat-top buzz cut and all .. A true hurricane hunter!

  • Bob 1985 was the hurricane that should not have been. the pressure was too high.

  • bob (1985) was a hurricane at south carolina!

  • I was 15 when this storm hit. My family and I were vacationing in Ft Myers at the time in an oceanfront condo. We had to evacuate because the of the storm surge. We came back though and finished out the rest of our vacation afterwards. I remember it washed out the condo pool and caused other minor damage mainly from the surge though. Brings back memories!

  • Check out the old old font on the statement!

  • Hi Victor. The audio in this clip is the actual recording from the NHC while I was recording. There isn't any audio from the actual storm in this clip, just Neil Frank (the NHC director at the time) talking on the phone in the background.
