David Sedaris' full reading of "six to eight black men". I added various clips and photos to the reading to make it more enjoyable and to help understanding. I only had footage of Sinterklaas bloopers, so it's mostly in pictures. Enjoy!

Ok, this is supposed to be humor, remember humor and satire? Life is serious and hard, lighten up and laugh! Sedaris is a genius.

I love David Sedaris! We had one of my cousin's listen to it after she escaped her parents' narrow-minded way of life and she laughed her ass off. The one about licking light switches is hilarious too.

The material is wonderful; but I consider his delivery absolute comedic perfection. :-)

Geboren en getogen Nederlander. But it’s always nice to have a Brit explain our culture to us. A bit presumptious. Zwarte Piet is a relic of colonial days when rich expats had the bad taste of having black servants in stead of white ones like Downton Abbey. Anyhow the myth was established long after slavery was abolished. That you “read” something into it is your problem as long as you speak for yourself. For ordinary Dutch kids there is no allusion to slavery.

I’m much to old to believe in Saint Nicolas, Santa Claus or Odin.

I take it you are not familiar with Dutch culture -or with the undertones of racism in Holland. They are of such nature that Zwarte Piet does not have to be characterised as a slave, because it is taken as read.

I am also not too sure what piece you are referring to when you state that one should not read too much into children's folklore. German and Scandinavian folklore is probably the origin of most of the stories you believe in.

Seidaris is mistaken: not ever is Black Pete characterized as a slave. The legend is relatively recent and originated long after slavery was abolished. On the other hand, it was customary until the 50s to portray the black servant in a very comical but un-PC light. That’s the real reason why some people have a problem with it. The drift of this piece is that one shouldn’t read too much into children’s folklore.

methink he gets Sinterklaas so much more on so many levels that your reply is painfully embarrassing... and I'd have any Coca Cola hols over any reminder of 500 yrs of slavery
