  • Please tell me that the bird's name is Musket. Because where I'am from, a musket is a male Sharp shinned hawks or Sparrow hawk (not to be confused with a Kestrel). Otherwise good video :)

  • Yeah, the bird's name is Musket. I picked it before I realized that tercel sharpies were called "muskets". I was just looking for a primitve weapon to use as a name, and that one stuck. Maybe I can change it to Blunderbuss... no, not as good. I guess I have to keep it. Thanks for the comment, I was wondering when someone would ask about that.

  • Well done! Its a great feeling when thier first free flight goes well. Just one wee point though....You shouldn't really be flying her free with the swivel still attached, its very easy for them to get hurt or caught up. Good work and keep us posted on the progress.

  • Thanks for the post Gumbob. For any who watch this video, please know that free-flying a bird with a swivel attached is very irresponsible and not to be done. If the bird leaves with the swivel attached to the jesses, that bird is dead. The swivel you see in the video is attached only to my glove and not the bird. I traded her to her slitless hunting jesses before the video was shot. Thank you for posting, I would not want folks to think that I flew her free with a swivel attached.

  • That looks so amazing! I bet it was alot of fun when she first took to the air and came right to you!

  • congrats! there aint nothing like first free flight! whats her flying weight?

  • Congrats!!!! I bet your blood was pumping when you got the first free flight.

I'm just learning about falconry myself.

    Thanks for the post!!!!

  • dozy tigger! did u not understand that "Musket" is the name of the bird! Don`t they teach u nothing on the Infamous Falconry Forum? lol

  • My appologies and thanks for the reply. I fly birds of prey everyday as a hobby and as my job. Its great to see someone with a mature and sensible approach to falconry. In this country it is far to easy for untrained people to simply buy a bird on a whim without realising how much time and work needs to be spent with the bird. Keep up the good work and let us know how the progress goes. All the very best.....Ian
