The canoe parade is the opener of the "Te Maeva Nui",the annual festival of independece of the Cook Islands.Though it was raining it has been one of the most exciting events during my Rarotonga visit.
oh my god ! ! the float 2006 - i was there dancing for the manihiki rakahanga ! ! no one can drum manihikian beats better than the creators themselves; the manihikians. thank you uncle tere and the boys for letting us dance for yous even though it was pissing with rain. but i enjoyed it 100% yeyah manihiki whuattt ! !
this clip brought back so many memories the island is still unspoilt good on you Raro people. Keep up the good work and the Cook Island tradition. Everything looks so beautiful including the people. E mataora tikai i te kite te tu mataora i te iti tangata Kuki Airani.
My husband and I got married on Muri Beach 4 days before this in brilliant sunshine, and were still on Raro for the canoe procession and watched it soaking wet. It really sums up the joy of the islanders, it was a great day, everyone happy despite the stormy weather

This captures the essence of the Islanders beautifully...despite the rain, they are celebrating the joy of life.
