A fan video using footage from my garden to accompany the studio version of the song "Brother" by One Hundred Dollars. Sort of a visual poem.

Certain sound passages from the garden were mixed in lightly with the music. The track is from "Songs of Man" (2011), and written by Simone Schmidt and Paul Mortimer.

Geek stuff-------------------------
Canon HV40 HD MiniDV (Cine mode)
Canon DM50 stereo mic
Final Cut Express 4.0.1

- constrained to 1280x720 to minimize zig-zag problem
- zig-zag problem much worse in original 1920x1280 version
- not sure it's an interlace problem (common with FCE)
- no difference in file sizes, funnily enough

  • @Phriendship Hi - for compressing outdoor footage with a lot of greenery, I found the x264Encoder from MyCometG3 worked better than the basic h264 one from Apple. Copy it to your main HD/Library/QuickTime folder. In FCE, use Export Using Quicktime Conversion & choose x264 Compression Type. In Options, leave the defaults as is except for Tagging, where you change "no nclc atom" to "HD 6-1-1…" and uncheck Add Gamma. Use 1280x720 & Deinterlace in Size Settings. OK? - cheers

  • What are you FCE4 video setting for import and export? I have the same software and camera :)

  • @scottsdunlop Thanks, Scott. I got lucky with the church bells at the end, and the touch of muted thunder during one of the windy bits. I think the bird at the start is a blue jay, and Toronto residents will recognize the faint sound of a streetcar turning at one point. I think this tune would be great as part of a movie soundtrack - but somebody else will have to make the movie! -cheers

  • the sound passages are great!
