Crowds were still flocking to Berlin Zoo on Tuesday to catch a glimpse of a white polar bear cub, whose fate has attracted international controversy.
Stumbling out of its cave, the cub known as 'Knut' delighted the crowds by playing around with a deflated football and poking around at the legs of his handler, Thomas Doerflein.
Doerflein has raised Knut by hand since his mother rejected him and his brother, who later died, shortly after their birth.
The fate of the nearly 19-pound bear attracted international attention, when an animal activist insisted that the cub would have been better off dead than raised by humans.
The zoo flatly rejected the idea.

Thank you someone agrees with me....I don't see how this is hurting the cub he is being taken care of and has food every day. He would have died by himself which I'm sorry I would like to see him alive and well. ^^

He'll never starve or want for shelter or be eaten by a hungry male bear. That's all he cares about. I promise you he won't sit around later in life composing poetry about the walls of his prison and the call of the wild.

The animal has no perception on what 'freedom' is...its not a 'prison' the bear only knows one life and thats a life in captivity..he has nothing to threaten him and is very well looked after.

An animal's primary interest is survival, not freedom, I think. I mean, as long as an animal breeds and has offspring, it's purpose of life is satisfied. They aren't picky like us, needing spiritual explanations to life and freedom and whatnot.

I wonder if the animal rights activist is right. Now the poor bear will live in a prison the rest of his life. Sure he will have food and shelter but it will be a prison nonetheless. I wish knew what the bear would prefer and then make a decesion.

It is pronounced "Knoot" with a hard K. It rhymes with "cute" thats why some german magazine call him "cute Knut"

They love to play and dig in sand. After that they are more brownish or yellowish than white :D and under the white fur is a black skin :D

For Americans the reporter said that people flocked to the zoo to see the "white polar bear cub". Do they heve them in other colours?
