The Transport Accident Commission in Victoria, Australia, recently released another 'you're all gonna die' motorcycle 'safety' TV ad. Here's our take on it: it's essentially a misguided and very expensive vilification of motorcycle riders, with numerous errors of fact. It seemed only fair to complete this review with what we see as the sub-text of the ad. Here is the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shOZamchXiE

  • Thanks for the kind feedback, folks. Motorcycle Trader magazine is currently producing a close replica of the original TAC ad, but with a positive message. I'll post that when it's available, which should be early next week. All the best, Guy

  • The TAC's own statistics fail to show lane splitting is an issue..

Who would run a campaign based on a faulty premise?

40% of m/c insurance claims are from rear enders.

2 riders were hit from behind and killed directly in front of the Melbourne coroners court.

Moving just a few car lengths forward would have prevented this.

Opinion not fact is driving the TAC.

Saying it loudly and frequently does not make it true.

"The king has no clothes" ...but who's willing to say so? :-)

  • You should have heard what I had to say to TAC staff at the launch of their ad. It was right along the lines you have expressed here. They clearly have NO understanding of riders and how to influence their behaviour. You would think that they would have garnered support from all the rider stakeholder groups before heading off on this anti-motorcycle tangent.

  • Respond to this video... it is the arrogance of the last half of your statement that translates to your bad driving skills, you would have to be one of the bastards that has nearly run a motorcyclist over because your own lack of concentration on your own driving or just greedy for the road

  • @Xcelplus motorcycles in Los Angeles are allowed to lane split and the motorists have amazing respect for them compared to here, cars move over to allow bike through, even in sydney I found the majority of motorists gave bikes space to get through when traffic is built up but not in victoria the will move over to deliberately block bikes. I have 130,000km riding experience here and in the US in the last 2.5 years

  • Respond to this video... the add is telling people like you that you have no responsibiliy if you run a motorcyclist over

  • @Jose1000ism the majority of motorcyclists do not ride like this and this add does not address the arrogance of car drivers in this state towards motorcyclists. I have 130,000km riding experience here and in the US and melbourne is the most dangers place to share the road with motorcars, where is there education for saftey

  • Anyone who knocks the TAC ad campaign is an idiot, it's not saying you will die its saying be careful. don't be so fucking stupid to think they don't want you riding a motorbike.

  • I'm glad I wasn't the only one then. Nice work.

  • @Xcelplus The 40% figure comes from Swann Insurance. I have the original article here

  • Hahaha ok this is a joke :P trust me

    Here is the real commercial.
