The SCA is testing Polypropylene as an alternate option to using rattan. Brother Amos posted a destruction test of a 1.25" polypropylene rod. This a rattan destruction test of a 1.5" side shaved stick of rattan.

  • I've not heard of anyone being injured due to the nature of polypropylene. The polypro sword I have only weighs slightly more than my normal rattan ones and only balances slightly differently.

I carved my grip at the end of the stick and then wrapped it in athletic grip tape. Works great!

  • Rattan is not a tenth as durable as polypropylene, but polypropylene also has more chance to break an armored sparrer's ribs and is much heavier (it will not permit as good form as rattan). Polypropylene also gives bad grip when the wielder sweats. The best option is to carve/drill the center of rattan sticks out less than half way and fill it with polypropylene.

  • Rattan is tough as hell.
