Saturday's Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile wasn't decided until the wire, with the speedy Hansen outlasting favored Union Rags by a head. But the race was won around the Juvenile's two turns.

Front-running Hansen was able to carve out a trouble-free trip in the 1 1/16-mile race, establishing a clear lead on the inside -- in stark contrast to Union Rags, who after breaking from post 10, was shuffled back to sixth early and hung four to five wide throughout.

Although Union Rags was able to threaten in the lane, testing Hansen to the limit, his closing punch was not enough to overcome his significant ground loss. The data-tracking service Trakus measured Union Rags as having raced 78 feet more than the winner.

"I tried to cover up, but I never had the opportunity," said his jockey, Javier Castellano.

The winner made his own luck, thanks to his natural quickness. After a fairly lively opening quarter-mile in 23.26 seconds, he settled under Ramon Dominguez down the backstretch with half-mile in 47.39 and three-quarters in 1:12.24.

  • And I want to give out a F.U. to J.Bailey...Hansen won this damn race because he earned it...stop making excuses for a horse that you have money invested in. Damn is greed ever destroying this nation...

  • Hansen should have no trouble stretching out IMO either. Yes he was getting a little tired at the end there, but he'll be maturing in the coming months, and should be able to carry his graceful speed longer without a hitch. Union Rags shouldn't be as green as he was here as he matures either. Creative Cause is another one to watch, likewise Dullahan. Drill always struck me as a tad overhyped, especially after his 1st race, and this showing didn't better my opinion of him.

  • @Tsarevna303 been fucking half a century since we had a match race. big b v curlin, ZENYATTA v RACHEAL. WE NEED ONE MATCH RACE.

  • @FishgirlNola yo they have a point fish.

  • @gallopracerfan slew didnt learn to relax at least uptill the running of 1978 marlboro cup.

  • @liljkm12 yo why the fuck would you hate a horse, you just being a fucking cunt man. union is quite good of course. i really like the way hansen looks, amazing coat, but union, if he hadnt drifted in and out would have definitely inhaled hansen.

  • @gunloc26 Oh stop - Union Rags was the most impressive horse in this race BY FAR. Hansen was gifted a perfect trip and still almost lost it to Union Rags who was forced to sit 4 outside the whole trip

  • Hansen got the best trip in this race, and Union Rags the worst, and yet it was nearly a dead-heat at the finish. Union Rags might have run another quarter furlong on his trip than Hansen did, and did it in basically the same time.

  • i like hansen and want him to win the triple crown or a triple crown race. i dont like union rags i kind of hate him but he better than hansen sadly cause he drifted out ran 9 lengths more and he will win the triple crown or two out of three even though i hate him but hes good i cant say nothing about that

  • 09:30 "And you'll see him (Hansen) way in front early..." - Yeah, and he'll stay there!

  • hasens the BEST, but union rags is definatly one to watch

  • @gunloc26 ok but lets be honest Union Rags ran several extra length and lost by 1/4 length, good race by Hansen but it looks like Union's a better racer we'll see.
