If I was a Legislator, I would definitely enact a single payer system. However, it wouldn't be the mirror image of what my fellow progressives envision.
If certain citizens are smokers or overeat or cause themselves health problems in a similar fashion, they will pay more in taxes than the citizen that doesn't. It isn't fair for all Americans to carry the same tax burden on a single payer system when people like smokers are using more healthcare because they willingly destroy their bodies

Healthcare works fine in Europe. Most developed countries realise the economics is better if everyone pays. That way premium go down for those who would have gotten it anyway and coverage goes to hose who would have ended up in A&E rooms.

You are spot on. Health care must be worked for, not just doled out on a whim. Too many people are not understanding that health care is in fact a good/service, not on par with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Chris is right on. It's how you look at life rights. Is health care a right or is it a privilege? I believe it should be a right. America is so behind other industrialized nations on the healthcare front its sad. I really hope Obama is able to get this done.

tingly feeling up his leg
Everyone does NOT deserve health care.
Health care is a luxury that only some can afford (just like cars before Henry Ford)
Before the 20th century advancements in health care, ppl were fine without it.
Now that we have health care for some (the rich) everyone wants in.
This would be like the poor demanding cars when the rich could afford them in the early 20th century.

Not sure if you are a comedian, mildly sarcastic, or mentally ill..

Understand that for health care to become accessible like the liberals want it, we must wait for another 2-3 generations so that the costs have decreased and expertise increased to such a level that everyone can afford it.
This is the sacrifice that we must continue paying until ALL our decendants can one day have health care.

OK, you answered: Mentally ill.
But I would still vote to treat you, because mental illness can adversely affect others-- even if you don't care about other humans.

You are willing to pay for wars, you pay for sidewalks you never use, you pay for a justice system to convict & jail people you don't know, pay for roads thousands of miles away so trucks bring you goods and food, but you won't pay for healthcare to treat your own American yourself or neighbors? (It also works as a preemptive strike as well.)
You are self-absorbed fools if you think for-profit healthcare doesn't SCREW Americans in every possible way.

All you fools saying this is "socialism" have as YET to be in a situation where you HAVE health insurance, but the costs of treating some catastrophic illness (brain injury from a drunk driver, cancer, a birth defect affecting your child etc.) may sap all your money-- well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
