God is three persons but one in essence. The person of Jesus, who was also God in nature. is the one who died. Only he was able to pay the price because only he was perfect. In the old testament God required a lamb be sacrificed to cover sin. The sacrifice of Jesus does more than cover the sin...it washes it away.  I know it is hard to grasp but like 1st Corinthians says, He uses the foolish things to shame the wise. God bless you.
