The Anderton Boatlift in north-west England dates from 1875. The 'Cathedral of the Canals' as it is called, provides a 50 foot (15.2m) vertical link between two navigable waterways: the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. It is the oldest boat lift in the world. Restoration started in 2001 and the boat lift was re-opened in 2002.
