Tom Clements completes a daring pass to little-used Tight End Robin Weber on 3rd down late in the 4th quarter of the 1973 Sugar Bowl. The Irish won a tight game, 24-23. Chris Schenkel, Bud Wilkinson, and Howard Cosell describe the action for national television, New Year's Eve 1973.
@rankinnwc - This game had incredible play after incredible play. Clements clutch pass. Pernicks kick return. Bama's fleeflicker. Bamas goal line stand where ND had to settle for a FG to go ahead by 1. Nothing was predictable that night. Had Bear gone for it and failed critics would of asked why did he go for it? Why not punt it and pen ND deep. There was still time. If Bama held they would of gotten the ball around the 50 possibly the 40 with some time left. Clement misses Bama ball on the 40.

I watched this game in its entirety last week and it put more than a few bullet holes in the mystique of the "Bear". He tried to back in to winning the game, hoping his opponent would make a mistake and then his team could steal the game. 4th and 3 at midfield and he had the best offensive player on the field (Wilbur Jackson ) and he chose to hope for a safety or bad punt ? After the controversy of '66 he should have known better

@BluesRob. Clements should have been in the NFL but no Bill Walsh then.

@jaytf123 your wrong miami of ohio would have beaten penn st that year they had one of the best defence that year sorry but penn st had no claim to the title

@misfits4life1 Be serious. Even Penn State who I dislike deserved a break over Miami Of Ohio. Penn State was undefeated with one tie. Who did Miami play that year?

Howahd Cosell doing cawhlege footbawhl? The only thing more hilarious sounding would have been his NY accent with Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles' drawls.

I went to Notre Dame law school with Clements, we used to study at the same table in the library every day. He was as cool briefing cases as he was throwing the pass here. He said once "pressure is self-inflicted."
